Back on the bike (just in time for the most epic day of the trip so far!)
I would say today’s ride is one of the most anticipated rides of the trip. Our route from Estes Park to Granby, Co takes us up and over Trail Ridge Pass, the highest paved road in the United States – NUTS! It was roughly a 23 mile climb to the top and it took us about three hours to get up to the summit.
Joel and Breezy :)
The summit was just over 12,000 feet of elevation and it was such an amazing thing to be up there, all together with this overwhelming sense of accomplishment. We did most of the ride together (relatively – we stopped for photo ops frequently, so it felt like we were all together!) By the time we got to the top, the air was so thin and we all had killer headaches. But it truly didn’t matter, nothing could stop our excitement and of course, certainly didn’t stop our top of Trail Ridge Road dance party….(you know - dance yourself clean!!!)
Bree, Megan and I at the summit!
We had so much support and a HUGE audience the whole way up. It was really cool to see and meet all the people at the top that had driven by us to cheer us on. We also got tons of inquires as to what we were doing and what for. (As you can imagine, we caused quite the scene.) It’s such a great feeling to be surrounded by so much positive energy!
Mark, Kevin and Joel - one of my favorite pictures of the trip so far....
Just when I though the day couldn’t get any better, I remembered that the best part of the ride was yet to come…THE DESCENT! It was by far the most incredible, and invigorating thing I have ever experienced. Not only was it breathtakingly beautiful, but we were FLYING down the Rocky Mountains, for 20 miles nonetheless! One of those things that makes you not be able to stop smiling hours after its over….Certainly a day I will never forget…
We rolled into Granby just totally on a high. The church provided us an awesome dinner and we got a chance to hang out and play with the Pastor’s kids…Ethan…I challenge you to a candyland rematch next year, get ready!
